Wales battled hard but fell to a 25-16 defeat against the Wallabies in the first Test in Sydney. A fairly even first-half had ended 13-10 in the home side's favour. Ben Thomas and Noah Lolesio traded early penalty kicks, before Taniela Tupou squeezed over for Australia's first try. Wales were awarded a penalty try in the 25th minute after the Wallabies collapsed a rolling maul. After the break, the tourists drew level with another successful penalty kick from Thomas. Filipo Daugunu then slid across the line for a second Wallabies try to retake the lead for the home side. Thomas cut the deficit to 2-points when he struck his third successful penalty kick for Wales in the 66th minute. But moments later, Tom Wright broke through to score a third Wallabies try.
