Japan v Ireland Match Reports

A much-changed Ireland beat a stubborn Japan 36-20 in the Nations Championship in New South Wales. Taira Main gave Japan the perfect start after only three minutes, pouncing on an Irish lineout error to race clear for the opening try. Ireland responded through Nick Timoney before Takuro Matsunaga's penalty restored Japan's lead. Tom O'Toole then crossed to put Ireland in front for the first time, but another Matsunaga penalty edged Japan back ahead. Robbie Henshaw's converted try five minutes before the break ensured Ireland took a 19-13 lead into half-time. Debutant Sean Jansen scored Ireland's fourth try five minutes after the restart to secure a bonus point and extend their advantage. Japan responded through replacement hooker Hayate Era on the hour mark to remain in contention, but Harry Byrne's late penalty moved Ireland nine points clear before Tom Stewart crossed in the closing moments to seal victory.
